Meet the Director
Dr. Sargent came to Moody High School in July 2009 after nine years as a member of the music faculty at Samford University, where he was Assistant Professor of Music, director of athletic bands and jazz ensemble, teacher of applied trumpet, music appreciation, ear-training labs, brass methods, and brass chamber ensembles. Dr. Sargent is an active freelance trumpeter and has performed with the Tuscaloosa, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Roanoke, and Alabama Symphony Orchestras, as a member of the Super-Jazz Big Band, the Samford faculty brass quintet, the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp faculty ensembles, and as a local trumpeter in touring off-Broadway productions. In addition, Dr. Sargent has performed as a semi-finalist in the master’s division of the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Virginia.
After a childhood spent in nearby Trussville playing trumpet in the Hewitt-Trussville band, Dr. Sargent earned the Bachelor of Science degree in instrumental music education at The University of Alabama and completed the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in trumpet performance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He now enjoys teaching his students at Moody and living and working with his family on their small farm near Ashville.
