UNA Honor Band

From Lloyd Jones, UNA director of bands:

Hello folks!

Our official deadline for applications is tomorrow (Tuesday), March 20th; however, I'll be here all week adding applications to the files. So, if you have kids who are interested in being apart of the 2012 UNA Invitational Honor Band there is still time to get them in the mix.

We have a great line-up of conductors: Garry Taylor, Tim Clinton, Chris Walker, Lori Hart, and Donald Dowdy. All these educators have numerous experience and come highly recommended. I look forward to hearing from you all, and I hope your students will be interested in participating in the 2012 UNAHB!

At the UNAHB we'll be awarding two (2) $1000 Director's Choice Awards. Should the winners choose to attend UNA and participate in the band program, this stipend will be added to the recipient's Band Performance Award once they arrive. So, it will increase their fall and spring award by $500 their first year. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

One last reminder .... we have received an additional sixty-four-thousand-dollars in scholarship money to award beginning this fall. This a great time to audition for UNA Band program, and it's not too late. We've got positions open in every section and hope to fill them with some of your talented students. As always, the Band Performance Award is not based on the student's academic major. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

- Lloyd

MES Percussion Ensemble Performance

On Thursday evening, March 15, band students who have been preparing solo and ensemble literature will have the opportunity to perform at Moody Elementary School for the annual art show. This is an optional performance and would require each student participating to provide for his or her own transportation.

This year, we are using a percussion ensemble. Students are asked to meet at the old MMS gym (connected to the current Moody Elementary School) at 4:45 pm on Thursday to move equipment from the van or truck into the gym before performances begin. Our performance time is set for 5:30-5:45. Afterward, we will load the truck again and meet at the band room to unload equipment before dismissal.

Because of the short time frame, parents and guardians are asked to please remain at the school during our performance so that students can have rides ready immediately. A delay in having a student picked up means a delay in returning equipment to the band room. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Questions? Call Dr. Sargent today at the Moody Band Room: 640-1995, or send an e-mail to brad.sargent@sccboe.org

MPA Make-Up Performance Tomorrow!!! 3/8/12

Dear Moody Band Parent or Guardian:

Our concert band will be performing a make-up performance at state band assessment at 4:40 pm on Thursday, March 8 at the new Hewitt-Trussville High School on Husky Parkway (off of Deerfoot Parkway/I-59). The bus will depart the band room at approximately 1:30. Before returning to Moody, we will stop at Pump-it-Up party center for a pizza party, pending approval by the Moody Band Boosters, and will return to the band room no later than 7:30 pm. We ask that students have rides ready at the band room no later than 7:30 pm. Please send your student to school on Thursday with a snack (granola bar or similar) and perhaps a bottle of water. The pizza dinner will be served around 6:15 pm, which means a long period between lunch and dinner for most students.

Students should be prepared to wear the band uniform, including Under-Armor shorts, band t-shirt, shoes, long black socks, and other required items to the event. Students should bring a change of clothes for wearing after our performance and on the return trip to Moody. Any instrument needs, including reeds, valve oil, mallets, and sticks, should be obtained before the trip.

Please complete and sign the attached Pump-It-Up waiver, found here: http://cdn.pumpitupparty.com/piu_waiver_rev10001.pdf to allow your child to participate in the party. Any student without a completed form will not be allowed to participate. A medical release form is included if you have not completed one already. Return the form to the band room by 8:00 am on Thursday, March 8. If you anticipate a conflict, please don't hesitate to contact me at the number above or via e-mail to brad.sargent@sccboe.org. Thank you for the privilege of sharing the joy of music with your student.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bradley K. Sargent, Band Director

Ronnie has asked me to start the discussion of modifying the concession stand and bathrooms. If you are interested in being a part of the group to determine what needs to be rearranged / changed / fixed, please email me at gmcginnis1605@charter.net.

Also, there are two grills outside the band concession stand. If anyone would like them, they are free to whoever gets them first. Next week, they will be thrown away.

MPA Trip Cancelled Today

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:

Because of the threat of severe weather this afternoon, our trip to Gadsden for MPA is cancelled. I am working to devise an alternate plan for performance on another day so that our students have an opportunity to perform what we have worked so hard to prepare.

Please take the utmost care this afternoon and evening during the storms. My hope is to see all students back on Monday, safe and sound.

Regards,
Dr. Sargent

Severe Weather Friday

Dear parents and guardians of concert band members:

Because of the threat of severe weather during our trip to Gadsden on Friday, 3/2, I am devising some contingency plans. Depending upon local conditions, I may choose to return students to the band room as soon as possible after our 2:00 pm performance instead of remaining in Gadsden. If a schedule change is made, students will be allowed to use cell phones or other means to make contact with you. I ask that, if possible, you establish a plan with your student so that during the afternoon you can be accessible to them.

In the meantime, I will monitor the weather forecast tonight and tomorrow, communicate with administrators, and make decisions to ensure the safety of our students to the best of my ability. You may call the band room any time at 640-1995 or e-mail brad.sargent@sccboe.org with questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Brad Sargent

Dear Moody Band Parents and Guardians:

Our concert band will be performing at state performance assessment at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 2 at Gadsden City High School. The bus will depart the band room at approximately 11:30 am. Before returning to Moody, we will stop at Stevie B’s Pizza for an early dinner in Gadsden, compliments of the Moody Band Boosters, and will return to the band room no later than 5:00 pm. We ask that students have rides ready at the band room no later than 5:00 pm. There is some threat of severe weather tomorrow, so if MHS, MJHS, and SCCBOE personnel deem a change of plans necessary for the safety of our students, we will make every attempt to notify you immediately.

Students should be prepared to wear the band uniform, including Under-Armor shorts, band t-shirt, shoes, long black socks, and other required items to the event. Students should bring a change of clothes for wearing after our performance and on the return trip to Moody.
