Schedule Revisions

All Bands:
Last night's spring concert will be rescheduled as soon as we can return to school and I can view the school calendar. I am hoping to reschedule for next Thursday at 6:00 pm.

Solo and Ensemble participants: The festival has been postponed until Saturday, May 14, beginning at 1:35 at Jacksonville HS. You should have time to participate and return to Moody in time for the band banquet at 7:00 that evening.

I hope all are safe. You may send messages through the Yahoo Blue Devils group, or if parents and guardians are on Facebook, that works for me as well. SCCBOE e-mail is not yet working for me. I will post calendar changes as soon as possible and am looking forward to seeing everyone at school as soon as we can return.

Fred's Grand Opening Performance Friday

All beginning, intermediate, and concert/marching band members (no auxiliaries) please report to your homeroom/1st block class Friday morning, 4/22/11 to check in with your teacher before coming to the band room. We will call roll in the band room before loading the buses at 8:00 am.

Be sure to bring all flip folders/stand tunes, and concert folders with you. We will return to school by 9:30 am. Medical release forms will serve as permission forms for boarding the buses. 3-4 parent chaperones are welcome to ride the bus with us. Contact Dr. Sargent at 640-1995.

Solo and Ensemble 2011

A message from our district vice-chairman:

The schedule for the Saturday, April 30th Solo & Ensemble Festival, held at Jacksonville High School, is listed below. Each school has been assigned a block of time. Instruct your students to perform for ANY AVAILABLE JUDGE during your block. Keep in mind that other schools will be playing during the same time so be patient. If one judge gets overloaded any waiting students will be instructed to play for another judge.

Directors will come to the registration area to pick up adjudication sheets then distribute to your students. Please keep a record of how many events you have that actually perform so you can check them off when the sheets are returned back to you.

At the end of your student’s performance block, directors can retrieve judge sheets and pay for medals in the registration area. If you choose to purchase your medals on site please have totals and money ready. Only the director will be able to purchase medals. We accept SCHOOL/ BAND BOOSTER CHECKS, or CASH ONLY. NO PERSONAL CHECKS.

Fern-Raiser Fundraiser Volunteers Needed!

Order forms were sent home with students several days ago for a band "Fern-Raiser" fern sale. Please consider helping our band program with the fern sale. Orders are due by April 18th. The order form also has been downloaded to the Yahoo! Moody Blue Devils Group.

We need volunteers to take orders for the ferns at the Moody Elementary School Market Day this Saturday, 4/16, from 8 am to 4 pm. 4-8 people are needed for each 2 hour shift as listed below. Reply to to sign up for a shift, and please include a contact number in your message.

As we approach another marching band season, funds are needed to help our band program survive and thrive. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Notice to Honor Band Participants!!

From Ragland band director, Mr. Dement:

Starting at 7:00 AM on Friday and going through Sunday, the railroad crossing in Ragland on HWY 144 will be closed. This will mainly affect students coming from Pell City. Moody students coming by interstate will also be affected. The alternate route is to continue on HWY 231 past the HWY 144 turn and instead turn right on County Road 26 (right across from Ashville High School). This leads directly to Ragland.

April Newsletter 2011

Greetings! Because this is such a busy time of the year for our band program, I decided to publish an April newsletter with reminders of important dates for this month and beyond. To be sure the newsletter gets home with each student, I ask that a parent or guardian please sign and return the attached signature page by this Friday, April 8 for a portion of your child’s weekly band grade.

Moody Blue Devils Group: If you have not done so already, please visit the band website at Click the link on the home page to join the Moody Blue Devils Group in Yahoo Groups. When you register, be sure to leave a comment to identify yourself as an associate of the band program. Once registered, you will receive regular e-mail notifications of all upcoming events for the Moody band.

St. Clair County Honor Band:
The St. Clair County Honor Band is a festival created by local band directors to serve band students in the St. Clair County area. The festival is open to students in grades 6-8 (Jr. High Band), and to students in grades 9-12 (High School Band). Here are the other details:

Location: Ragland High School

Chair Placement Auditions: Tuesday, April 5, 4:00 pm, Ragland High School. Audition requirements have already been sent home with students who expressed an interest in the festival.

Festival Dates: April 8-9.

Friday, April 8: Rehearsals 8:30 am- 3:00 pm. Lunch is provided.

Saturday, April 9: Rehearsals 9:00 am-10:30 am.

Concert at 11:00 am Saturday. Concert admission is free.

Cost: $20.00 per student. Includes lunch on Friday and an honor band medal.

Parents/Guardians are responsible for transporting and supervising students during the auditions and festival.

ABA District II Solo and Ensemble Festival
Festival Date: Saturday, April 30.

Location: Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville, AL. Parents and guardians of the below named students are responsible for transportation and supervision before, during, and after the festival.

Registration Deadline: Monday, April 4.

The following students have made a commitment to the solo and ensemble festival at a $5.00 per event fee, payable to the Moody Band Boosters by Friday, April 8. In the event a student cancels or fails to successfully pass a playing test administered by Dr. Sargent on the chosen piece, the non-refundable $5.00 fee per event is still due to the band boosters.

Danceline and Majorette Clinics:
Dates: Monday-Thursday, April 4-8, 3:00-5:00 pm daily.

Participants: Students who have been named as successful candidates in the color guard auxiliary tryouts last month have the option of continuing training to audition for a position on the dance line or majorette line at the completion of clinics.

Fees: The $25.00 fee paid by each participant during the first round of clinics satisfies the fee requirements for both tryouts. No additional fee is due.

Dance Line, Drum Major, and Majorette Tryouts:
Date: Friday, April 8

Special Note for Drum Major Candidates: The $25.00 tryout fee, made payable to the Moody Band Boosters, is due by Thursday, April 7. Be sure to bring a CD containing your choice of tryout routine material.

Tryout results will be posted online at and via e-mail through the Moody Blue Devils Yahoo Groups during the evening following tryouts. Tryouts are closed to spectators.

Spring Semester School Band Activity Fees Due!!
Each semester, St. Clair County schools assess a band activity fee of $20.00 per student, grades 7-12. The band activity fee is used for transportation to fall football games and for instructional needs such as beginning, intermediate, concert, and marching band music. The spring semester fee, made payable to Moody High School, is due in the band room by April 15.

Marching Up!
The Moody High School marching band typically includes students in grades 9-12, though a number of current beginning band students will soon receive invitations from Dr. Sargent to “march up” as 8th graders for the coming fall semester. An invitation to march up is a high honor in the Moody band program. Marching up involves an increased level of responsibility from parents and students, beginning with mandatory attendance at the band booster/marching participant meeting on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 pm in the MHS lunch room (See below). In the coming fall semester, the band will rely heavily upon our current class of beginners. If issued an invitation, please don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Sargent to discuss any concerns or to ask any questions. Likewise, if your child is not issued an invitation and you would like an explanation, please contact Dr. Sargent at the phone or e-mail address above.

All-State Band Festival, Mobile, AL
Dates: April 13-16

Marching Band Informational Meeting/ Band Booster Meeting

Date: April 19

Location: MHS/MJHS lunch room

Time: 6:30 pm

Attendance Mandatory for all 2011 marching band members, including auxiliaries. All other students and families strongly encouraged to attend.

Food Giant Fundraiser:
Food Giant is hosting a grocery bagging fundraiser for all Moody band students in grades 7-12 on Saturday, April 23. Students may sign up for a shift on Dr. Sargent’s office door. Parents are needed to chaperone students during shift times throughout the day. Proceeds from the fundraiser are placed into individual student accounts.

Spring Band Concert and Art Show
Date: Thursday, April 28

Time: 6:30 pm

Location: MHS gym and school grounds

Personnel: All band students, grades 7-12.

Student attendance and performance in the concert is mandatory and serves as a portion of the band grade for the semester.

May 14: Band Room/Band Field workday, 8:00 am-12:00 noon. Please come help prepare our field and other facilities for the fall marching season.

St. Clair County Honor Band

St. Clair County Honor Band is upon us! All students, beginner through high school, are eligible. Just sign up with Dr. Sargent, then show up and audition for a chair placement! We need as many participants as possible from Moody. $20.00 participation fee is due in the Moody band room from all participants by next Friday, April 8. Dates: April 8-9. Friday, April 8-Rehearse from 8:30 AM-3:00 PM. Lunch will be provided. Saturday, April 9-Rehearse from 9:00 AM-10:30 AM, Concert at 11:00 AM. Concert admission is free.

Band Breakdown: H.S. Band-Grades 9-12. Jr. High Band-Grades 6-8.

Audition Date: Tuesday, April 5 from 4:00 PM until done. Judge assignments are pending.

Audition Material: A Flat, B Flat, E Flat, & F CONCERT Scales w/Arpeggio from memory (2 octaves for H.S. flutes and clarinets,extra credit for 2 octave Jr. High flutes and clarinets)and Sight Reading.

Percussion Audition Material: Sight reading only.

Cost: $20 per student-Includes lunch on Friday and an Honor Band Medal. Directors should collect fees and write one check for all students if possible. Thanks!
